Centenary Celebrations - Open Day - Sunday 14 May 2006
|
Clough Hall Bowling Club celebrated their centenary on Sunday 14 May 2006 with an Open Day at the bowling green in Clough Hall Road, Kidsgrove.
Early records of the club suggest that the bowling green was laid in 1890 or 1891. However, in 1897 probably due to financial problems Elias Mather Esq who was an agent for Clough Hall Pleasure Gardens sold part of the Estate to Clough Hall Sports Company Ltd. This included the bowling green.
Parkers Brewery of Burslem, a forerunner of Ansells Ltd purchased the lands in 1901 when the sports Company went into liquidation. From 1901 until 1906 the bowls were organised from the Clough Hall Hotel as it was known.
In 1906 the Clough Hall Bowling Club was founded and from then on was organised and run by the bowlers.
The bowling green was purchased from Parkers Brewery of Burslem for the sum of £87-10.0d with a loan of £5 from 20 members in March 1951.
At the event on Sunday, members of the public were invited to come along and join in the celebrations and try their hand at the art of crown green bowling. A photo session took place of all members and every-one enjoyed the light refreshments. Guests included Charlotte Atkins MP and Councillor Margaret Astle.
